2023 Mentoring Conference Program
Mentoring Post-Conference Report

The second annual AEA CSQIEP Queer Economics PhD Student Mentoring Conference will be held August 5-7, 2024, in San Diego, California. The conference is targeted at LGBTQ+ economics PhD students in their job market year and the year prior. The conference will focus on the queer experience, job market preparation, LGBTQ+ job market concerns, and building mentoring and community networks.

In Fall 2023, CSQIEP asked economics PhD students and senior economist mentors for expressions of potential interest in attending the conference. If you have not responded but are interested, please email the organizers ASAP at csqiep.mentoring@gmail.com.

This conference is sponsored by the Committee for the Status of LGBTQ+ Individuals in the Economics Profession (CSQIEP), the American Economic Association; the National Science Foundation; UC San Diego; and the Vanderbilt LGBTQ+ Policy Lab. CSQIEP’s goal is to cover travel and lodging costs for all PhD student mentees.

Both students (mentees) and mentors should complete an application. The application for the 2024 conference is here: https://survey.sogolytics.com/r/g6XnmG. All applications – mentees and mentors – are due March 15, 2024.

Eligibility Requirements for Mentors

  • You must have graduated with a PhD in Economics (or related fields) by Summer 2024.
  • You must attend a mandatory zoom session on being a mentor in late Spring 2024. Multiple sessions will be offered to fit your schedule.
  • You must commit to interacting with your approximately 4 to 6 assigned mentees and likely one co-mentor before and during the conference (and, as your schedule permits, after the conference as well, though this is not required). We envision mentors meeting their mentees in a group zoom format once or twice in June/July before meeting in person at the conference in August.

Eligibility Requirements for Students (Mentees)

  • You must be currently enrolled in or on temporary leave from a PhD program in economics or a related field at an institution in the United States, Mexico, or Canada.

Related fields include:

    • economic specialties, such as agricultural economics or environmental economics.
    • public policy/administration or business PhD programs in which the program requires taking the economics PhD core theory sequence of courses.

If you are unsure whether your program qualifies, please contact us at csqiep.mentoring@gmail.com before applying.

  • You must plan to go on the job market in 2024-25 or 2025-26.
  • You must have an unpublished research paper that can be workshopped at the conference and in the 6-10 weeks before the conference. If you are on the 2024-25 job market, this paper would ideally be your JMP.
