Impact of a cigarette tax hike on child health
A cigarette tax hike can have a profound effect on a person’s decision to smoke, and also on the long-term health of children born to mothers who quit. Children who were born six months before a tax hike (green) spent nearly three days more each year home from school than those born around the time of a tax hike (gray).
Note: children aged 5 to 17, only large tax hikes of at least 72 cents are included.
