Nov 24 -- The NSF National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) has published an extensive series of data tables on innovation (all firm sizes) and R&D (microbusinesses [1-9 employees]) from the first (2017) Annual Business Survey (ABS).

The ABS is co-sponsored by NCSES and the Census Bureau and replaces the Census Bureau's Survey of Business Owners and Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs and the NCSES Microbusiness R&D and Innovation Survey. The ABS includes several topical modules that rotate annually. For the 2017 ABS, content includes R&D (for microbusinesses), innovation, technology, and financing.

Types of innovation -- product, process, marketing, and organizational -- by industry, firm size, and owner demographic characteristics (gender, race/ethnicity)
Innovation and: R&D, regulation, factors that impede, partnerships, public support, intellectual property (patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, NDAs)
Technology reliance (e.g., cloud computing)
Population size. 5.3 million employer firms; 4.6 million employer firms were in scope for the innovation and technology modules; 3.5 million employer firms with between one and nine employees were in scope for the R&D module.
Reference period. Calendar year 2017; for the innovation module, the reference period is 2015 to 2017.
The ABS frame is stratified by geographic area defined by state, frame, and industry and is systematically sampled within each stratum.
