The School of Public Affairs at American University invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of associate or full professor to serve as director of its Washington Institute for Public Affairs Research (WIPAR). The director will report to the Dean of the School of Public Affairs (SPA) and will support faculty in developing innovative research projects, securing external funding to support that work, organizing multi-faculty research projects, and connecting with policymakers who can put research findings into practice. With over 60 faculty members currently engaged in public affairs research, the School of Public Affairs seeks to spur groundbreaking research that will contribute to the major public policy issues of our time. Depending on qualifications, the appointee to this position may be recommended for tenure at the time of hiring.

The successful candidate will provide leadership in tapping the existing capabilities of SPA faculty and crafting funding strategies to foster research pertinent to critical policy issues. Among other things, the director will provide support for current faculty seeking external research funding, help build teams of scholars in SPA and beyond to seek major research funding, and facilitate partnerships with other research institutions.

Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, e.g., political science, criminal justice, or public policy. Prior leadership experience in grant writing or management is necessary, as is past work in a university, foundation, or research setting. Salary and benefits are competitive.
