The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) anticipates filling one or two Ph.D. level economist positions in the International Economics Directorate during 2015. BEA’s mission as a leader in the development of new and innovative approaches to economic measurement is to strengthen our understanding of the U.S. economy by improving GDP and other national, regional, industry, and international accounts data.

Work in the international area involves research and analysis on international finance and investment, trade in goods and services, and the operations of multinational enterprises. Many of the projects employ micro level data from BEA surveys of international direct investment, multinational enterprises, and international services trade. Studies may cover such topics as globalization, trade in value added, and trends in the structure and composition of the balance of payments and international investment position.

Position focused on trade in value added: Experience with manipulating firm level microdata and input-output accounts is valued for this position. A successful candidate will conduct independent research on topics of importance to BEA’s mission and will be expected to publish research in professional journals, the Survey of Current Business, as well as present at conferences.

General position: Candidates who have demonstrated experience with empirical research are preferred, particularly in topics dealing with international economics and/or microeconomics. BEA will interview the candidates at the ASSA meeting in Boston. Starting salaries for a Ph.D. level economist range from $63,091 to $98,305 per year, depending on experience and education.
