Full Text of JOE Listing:

The Department of Economics at London Business School is seeking to recruit a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow / Assistant for an ERC (European Research Council) funded major research project titled ‘The Political Economy of African Development”. The post will be under the direction of Professor Elias Papaioannou.

The Research Fellow / Assistant should have an experience and interest in growth, development economics and economic history and ideally also in economic geography. The candidate should be proficient with GIS software (ArcGIS) and be able to program in python (or C). In depth, knowledge of STATA, R, and/or MatLab is essential. Strong knowledge of applied econometrics (and some experience with spatial econometric models) would be particularly beneficial. Knowledge of French and Portuguese, though not required, would be a plus. Research or other experience from Africa is desirable.

The applicant should be willing to work on survey data as well as creatively think of interesting ways to explore spatial data. The candidate would need to regularly communicate with teams on the field, collect and organize data as well being flexible to travel. The project is interdisciplinary and the candidate should be willing to collaborate and communicate with scholars specializing in African economic history, sociology, political science and anthropology.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or be near completion in economics from a leading institution.

The post will offer substantial opportunity to participate in and contribute to the multi-year multi-faceted project. Moreover, the candidate could spend time in the Economics Department at Brown University working under the supervision of Associate Professor Stelios Michalopoulos. Candidates should provide in their application a detailed outline of how their experience and training in economic growth, development economics or/and economic geography would enable them to contribute to the research project and details of their own research, if relevant. The ideal starting date is September 2020 with some flexibility. Starting salary will be up to 42,000 GBP per annum, depending upon relevant qualifications and experience.

The post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of (up to) two years.
