Full Text of JOE Listing:
CBO is a nonpartisan agency that provides Congress with the objective, timely analyses needed for economic and budgetary decisions. CBO is currently seeking economists in a variety of fields. Positions require excellent quantitative and communication skills, ability to work in teams, and an interest in working on policy issues, especially legislative priorities of the Congress. CBO is seeking a Climate and Energy Economist, two Labor Economists, a Macroeconomist, a Health Economist, and an Industrial Organization Economist to work with CBO’s health team.
The Climate and Energy Economist will conduct research and analysis on climate change, energy and related environmental issues; transportation and infrastructure; and federal policy toward research and development. CBO expects to expand its capacity to model the effects of climate change and climate change policy on the budget and the economy.
One of the Labor Economists will work on a variety of labor, demographic, health, and program participation issues that relate to CBO’s Long-Term Budget Outlook. The other Labor Economist will contribute to a wide variety of labor policy issues, including the interaction between federal policy, earnings, and labor force participation.
The Macroeconomist will contribute to CBO’s analysis of major developments in the economy and conduct research on current economic developments and projections of economic trends. Preference will be given to candidates with empirical and econometric backgrounds.
The Health Economist will work with CBO’s health team on a wide variety of health care proposals and policies, such as insurance coverage, health care spending, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on health care spending, and disparities in health care access. The successful candidate will contribute to developing new studies and to designing and improving the state-of-the-art analytical models that underlie them.
The Industrial Organization Economist will work with CBO’s health team to contribute to analyses and studies exploring health insurance markets and institutional mechanisms to increase CBO’s capacity to model various Congressional proposals, such as a public option for nongroup insurance, arbitration for surprise billing, or a premium support system.
CBO analysts address challenging substantive issues in economics and public policy while working in a collegial environment that provides opportunities for research on topics relevant to the agency’s endeavors. CBO has broad access to unique and varied data. Analysts are encouraged to pursue independent research projects related to CBO’s broad mission and present this work at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
