The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Tennessee is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with interest in conducting research on international agricultural trade. The successful candidate will work with a team of researchers to investigate the impacts of current and pending trade agreements, specific trade policies, and regulatory structure and non-tariff measures on U.S. and global agricultural trade. The postdoctoral researchers will work with Dr. Andrew Muhammad, Professor and Blasingame Chair of Excellence in Agricultural Policy, conducting USDA funded research, as well as assisting with other research projects specific to particular agricultural sectors and countries. The postdoctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to work closely with Extension specialists, examining the importance of international trade to Tennessee’s agricultural and forestry economy.

We are seeking a candidate with interest in a 2-year position. The position is evaluated and renewed annually, conditional on performance and mutual interest. There may be opportunities to extend the position for a third and fourth year. The anticipated start date is between September 1 and December 31, 2021 (negotiable).

The position will offer a competitive salary that is commensurate with qualifications and experience. An attractive fringe benefit package is included.

Professional Opportunities

Postdoctoral researchers are expected to co-author multiple publications in field and interdisciplinary journals. Researchers are encouraged to participate in professional conferences and to seek other professional development opportunities. This position also involves opportunities to work on research with graduate and undergraduate students.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in agricultural or applied economics (or a closely related field), and strong training and interest in international trade modeling. Experience with advanced graphing and visualization software (e.g., Tableau Software or something comparable) is desired, but not required.

Applicants should have some research experience and coursework related to quantitative economic modeling and/or applied econometrics, as well as a record of peer-reviewed publications or advanced working papers related to the position description.

Preferred qualifications include one or more of the following: Proficiency in econometric modeling of trade and trade policy; CGE experience with GAMS, Gempack, or similar modeling languages; strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team-based atmosphere; experience working with large datasets and calibration of simulation models.
