The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,200. The total annual consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$7.6 billion.

School of Accounting and Finance

Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Economics (Ref. 21092106)

The School of Accounting and Finance is the longest established accounting school in Hong Kong with over 80 full-time academic and teaching staff in the areas of accounting, finance, economics, and law. The School has adequate resources to support a variety of research interests and activities, and has comparative advantage in promoting cross-disciplinary research that is needed in the modern business world. The School has maintained an excellent network with overseas and Chinese Mainland institutions for collaborative work.

PolyU is one of the world’s leading universities which ranked 66th in the QS World University Rankings 2022. The research of our Faculty of Business has been ranked 59th in the world (The UTD Top 100 Worldwide Business School Rankings based on research contributions for the period 2016-2020). Economics team consists of a group of active researchers who published recently papers in top-tier refereed journals such as Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, European Economic Review and Canadian Journal of Economics.

The HKSAR is an international city located strategically at the heart of Asia and is the gateway to Chinese Mainland, with excellent transport links to major international cities. The University’s campus is located near the harbour connecting Kowloon and the Hong Kong Island, and in the vicinity of Tsim Sha Tsui, which is the most popular area for visitors.

Duties

The appointee will be required to:

(a) undertake teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels;

(b) conduct research that leads to publications in top-tier refereed journals and award of research grants;

(c) engage in high-level consultancy in environmental related areas, and other scholarly activities;

(d) provide leadership in research and programme/curriculum development;

(e) supervise graduate student theses/dissertations;

(f) perform academic and administrative duties; and

(g) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of the School or her delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in Economics or a related discipline with research interests in international economics, development economics, applied economics or applied econometrics and excellent communication skills. Applicants for the post of Assistant Professor should have the potential to secure publications in top-tier refereed journals. For appointment at the Associate Professor level, applicants are in addition required to have:

(a) extensive university teaching and relevant research experience;

(b) a strong publication record in top-tier refereed journals; and

(c) good networks in both academia and the profession at regional and international levels.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment for Assistant Professor will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. An appropriate term will be provided for appointment at Associate Professor level.
