The American Medical Association (AMA) is the largest physician association and convenes almost 200 state and specialty medical societies. Its mission is to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The AMA’s Economic & Health Policy Research Group is recruiting an Economist for a position opening in November 2023. The Group, which has been part of the AMA for over 30 years, includes four economists who provide analytic support in the development of, and advocacy for, AMA policy. Its research areas include:
• Changes in physician practice characteristics through primary data collection in the Physician Practice Benchmark Survey.
• Competition in healthcare markets.
• Tracking Medicare spending and utilization via Medicare claims data.
• Medical professional liability insurance.
• Health care providers’ scope of practice.
• Health care spending.

Although we anticipate that the successful candidate will focus on a variety of those research areas, familiarity with Medicare claims data and Medicare payment issues is a plus. Applicants must have a PhD (or be a PhD candidate) in economics, strong analytic skills, excellent communication skills, and enjoy working in an interdisciplinary team environment.

Hybrid (3 days office/2 remote).
