Full Text of JOE Listing:
The Department of Economics and Geosciences at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) is soliciting applications for a Distinguished Visiting Professor (DVP) in economics starting summer 2025. We welcome applications from economists from any field of specialization in economics. The prospective DVP must be a career employee at a U.S. institution of higher education. U.S. citizenship is also required.
The purpose of the USAFA DVP Program is to supplement the Air Force Academy faculty by providing for the temporary assignment of civilians with extensive experience and diverse expertise from other institutions of higher education including Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions. These civilian educators bring vital expertise to the Air Force and take back to their permanent positions a broadened awareness of the Air Force Academy. To be eligible, a visiting faculty member must be a career employee at their home institution before beginning their Academy assignment and must return to their home institution following their Academy assignment.
DVPs will remain an employee of their home institution of higher education for most purposes. The period of assignment will normally be for approximately eleven months (1 July through 31 May). DVPs will continue to receive their salary and benefits directly from their home institution. The Air Force Academy will reimburse the institution for the salary and the employer's contribution for basic fringe benefits such as health and life insurance, retirement, and social security. The Air Force Academy may pay for reasonable moving expenses to and from the Academy. Visiting faculty members may also be authorized to reside on the Air Force Academy in government housing at the fair market rental rate.
The USAFA Economics program includes faculty members from a diverse set of occupational histories and educational institutions. The program teaches the core Introduction to Economics course that is a graduation requirement for all cadets as well as courses towards a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and support courses for other majors. The department offers opportunities for research collaborations across multiple subfields of economics including labor, education, environmental and sport as well as with the Air Force Office of Labor and Economic Analysis (OLEA), which conducts policy-relevant research pertinent to the broader Air Force and Space Force using Air Force personnel and policy data. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in supporting a program similar to USAFA’s. The ability to advise students, collaborate with other faculty in the Department of Economics and Geosciences, and foster a congenial environment is highly desirable.
The Air Force Academy is dedicated to building a diverse student body and a pluralistic faculty committed to a multicultural environment. Hence, we are especially interested in candidates whose teaching, life experience and/or research interests contribute to a climate that values and uses diversity in all its forms. The mission of the USAFA is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation.
To apply please email a cover letter and CV to Dr. Jill Harris at jill.harris@afacademy.af.edu no later than Aug 16,2024 for full consideration.
