CSWEP at the Annual AEA Meeting

CSWEP at the Annual AEA Meeting offers a wide range of opportunities for engagement. CSWEP’s seven competitive-entry Paper Sessions give female junior economists profession-wide exposure and account for a disproportionate share of women in the AEA Program. At the Mentoring Breakfasts for Junior Economists, both male and female junior economists who are within 7 years of their PhD and graduate students in the job market can meet with senior economist mentors for informal discussion on topics including research and publishing, tenure and promotion, teaching, and work-life balance. The CSWEP Business Meeting and Award Ceremony brings the CSWEP Community together for a presentation of the Annual Report on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession and to celebrate the recipients of the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award and the Elaine Bennett Research Prize. The CSWEP Reception for Senior Economists celebrates camaraderie among women and non-binary scholars at the associate professor or full professor stage, or their equivalent in non-academic or non-tenure track positions. CSWEP welcomes all past CeMENT participants to attend an Open CeMENT Reunion to reconnect and network at the annual meetings every year. CSWEP also hosts occasional Roundtables, an evening Reception, an Open Meeting Space, and a Room for Nursing Mothers

CSWEP at the Regional Annual Meetings

All economists are encouraged to participate in sessions organized by CSWEP’s five regional representatives at the Annual Meetings of the Eastern, Mid-western, Southern, and Western Economic Associations, and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Fall Research Meeting (APPAM). In recent years, CSWEP activities at the regionals have emphasized career development and networking.

CeMENT Mentoring Workshops

Growing out of the first CCOFFE Workshop in 1998 and offered annually since 2015, the success of the CeMENT Mentoring Workshops in promoting the careers of young economists has been rigorously documented. In addition to professional knowledge, participants typically emerge with a network of peers and senior mentors. The CeMENT Workshop for Faculty in Doctoral Programs (formerly called the National Workshop) targets women and non-binary faculty in departments with PhD programs where research accomplishments carry heavy weight in promotion. The CeMENT Workshop for Faculty in Non-Doctoral Programs (formerly called the Regional Workshop) targets women and non-binary faculty in departments where teaching receives more weight. The common application portal opens every year on July 1st

Mid-Career Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Mentoring Program

CSWEP’s Mid-Career P2P Mentoring Program aims to help mid-career economists find community, support, and mentoring. Participants will form small groups of economists at a similar career stage or with similar concerns. CSWEP will provide a suggested “curriculum” and supplemental materials, covering topics like goal setting, time management, planning for promotion, and managing service.

Summer Economics Fellows Program

This fellowship program is available to senior graduate students and junior faculty, who spend a summer in residence at a sponsoring research institution. Sponsored by the American Economic Association and initiated by a National Science Foundation grant, the Summer Economics Fellows Program is designed to increase the participation and advancement of women and underrepresented minorities in economics.

Mentoring and Professional Development Resources

CSWEP develops professional development resources and distributes career advice and information on career opportunities, as well as career development webinars. Most of this is of special interest to economists just establishing their careers, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity. Resources include professional development readings from the CeMENT Mentoring Workshops, links to organizations that mentor and support women at all levels of economics and business, and links for undergraduate economics majors.
